Frequently Asked Questions
Which Blue Dinosaur products are gluten free?
Gluten free runs right through the range rather than sitting in one corner of it. Our Protein + Fibre bars, Protein & Collagen bars, Clean Bars and Protein Balls are all made without gluten containing ingredients. That is because of how they are built: dates, nuts, cacao, coconut and fruit, with protein from whey, egg white, collagen or plants. There is no wheat, no barley, no rye and no oats in any of them. Check the individual product page for the specific flavour you are after.
Are your products safe for people with coeliac disease?
Our recipes contain no gluten containing ingredients at all. For coeliac disease the other question that matters is manufacturing, because cross contamination can occur even when a recipe is clean. Full allergen information, including any shared facility statements, is on every product page and on pack, and we would always recommend reading it before you buy. If you have coeliac disease and want detail about a specific product before ordering, get in touch and we will give you a straight answer.
What does gluten free actually mean on an Australian label?
More than it does almost anywhere else. Under the Australian and New Zealand Food Standards Code, a food can only be labelled gluten free if it contains no detectable gluten, and it must also contain no oats and no malted gluten containing cereals. There is no allowable threshold. That is stricter than the United States and Europe, where up to 20 parts per million is permitted and oats are often allowed. So an Australian gluten free claim is a meaningfully higher bar than an imported one.
Are your products gluten free by recipe, or gluten free by substitution?
By recipe. Most gluten free snacks in a supermarket are conventional products rebuilt with substitute flours: rice flour, tapioca starch, maize starch standing in for wheat. Ours never had gluten in them to begin with. A Clean Bar is dates, coconut and cacao. A Protein Ball is dates, nut butter and plant protein. Nothing was taken out and replaced, because nothing needed to be. That is also why they are grain free, not just gluten free.
Do you use oats, and why does that matter?
We do not use oats in anything. This matters more in Australia than most people realise: oats are specifically excluded from gluten free labelling here, even oats grown and processed without wheat contamination, because a protein in oats affects some people with coeliac disease. That rules out most muesli bars and a lot of granola based snacks from carrying a gluten free claim in this country. Our bars are grain free, so the question never arises.
Are your products made in a facility that also handles gluten?
Every product page carries the full allergen statement for that item, including any shared facility or shared equipment declarations, and the same information is on pack. We would rather point you to the specific, current statement for the product you are considering than give you a blanket answer that might not apply to every line. If you need certainty before ordering, contact us and we will confirm the position for that product.
Which gluten-free products are also dairy-free or vegan?
Several. Our Protein & Collagen bars are gluten free and dairy free, using egg white and beef collagen rather than whey, though they are not vegan. Clean Bars are gluten free, dairy free and plant based. Protein Balls are gluten free and plant based, built on faba bean and brown rice protein. Our Protein + Fibre bars are gluten free but contain whey, so they are not dairy free. If you need gluten free plus plant based, start with the Clean Bars and Protein Balls.
Do you make gluten-free protein bars?
Yes, two ranges of them. Our Protein + Fibre bars carry 20g of whey protein and 10g of fibre per bar and are gluten free. Our Protein & Collagen bars carry up to 21g of protein from egg white and beef collagen, and are gluten free and dairy free. Both are made without wheat, barley, rye or oats. If you want a gluten free protein bar that is also plant based, our Protein Balls deliver 10g of plant protein a serve.
Are gluten-free snacks automatically healthy?
No, and it is worth saying out loud. Removing gluten does not make a biscuit a health food. A lot of gluten free packaged snacks replace wheat with refined starches, then add sugar and fat to fix the texture, which can leave them with less fibre and more sugar than the product they replaced. Gluten free tells you what is not in something. It says nothing about what is. The useful question is what the label actually contains, which is why ours run to five to seven real ingredients.
Which gluten-free products can I buy right now?
Our Protein + Fibre bars are available now in four flavours: Peanut Salted Caramel, Coconut Choc Chip, Choc Pistachio and Strawberry Matcha. The rest of the range is between production runs while we relaunch, and is marked as returning soon. Add your email to the alert on anything you want and you will hear the day it is back.
